Synergy: Artists Collaborating Across Disciplines

Presentations and a conversation including Guillermo Galindo, Fernando Hernández, Robin Lasser, Adrienne Pao and Nora Raggio

Date: Thursday October 21, 2010, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

A compelling evening: five artists will share their insights, drawing from a variety of collaborative experiences. Fernando Hernández is an artist, educator, and curator of collaborative exhibits related to the Days of the Dead, working with artists and hundreds of students. Robin Lasser, Professor of Art at San José State University, works in collaboration with artists, community organizations, and international coalitions on socially engaged art. TRANSFORMED:

Transformed:Turning Found Objects into Fine Art

A panel discussion with six artists in residence at Cubberley Studios

Date: Thursday November 18, 2010, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A lively panel of six Cubberley artists will discuss the diverse journey of re-purposing items and ideas into engaging renewed artwork. Come see and hear how discarded and mundane objects such as tin mint boxes, old photographs, pieces of architecture, clothing and symbols are restored and transformed into works of fine art.

Peter Foley appropriates elements of existing media whether philosophical ideas, symbols, artifacts, and styles from art history or popular culture in his artwork. Inge Infante finds inspiration in the urban mess by juxtaposing unrelated discarded objects in her collages and assemblages. Marianne Lettieri constructs her art using various artifacts that introduce grace, gratitude and wit to elicit social commentary. Julie Nelson-Gal takes an archeological approach by re-interpreting photography in assemblage, collage and printmaking. Michael Pauker changes the alchemy of collage making into poetic resonant images. Cristina Velazquez uses recycled garments and clothing catalogs to expose female concerns.
